  1. Fun thing I came across while looking at our digital collections: this beautiful example of a check written by Joseph Priestly in 1796. It looks similar in several ways to present-day ones but also is hand-written and witnessed! bit.ly/3uN4uPI

      $166 in 1796 would be several thousand today -- I guess nowadays the use of a printed check would allow one to presume that the account's owner wrote it, something about possession being 9/10ths of the law. But back then? I can see why you'd want a witness for checks!
