So at 2 in the morning I was up crying about how he's so very very small and the surgery is so very very much. As I shared in the first posts, his heart is good, bloodwork is good, everything points to him being overall a very well dog. But he's so very small.Permalink On twitter.com

Bless him, he has no idea this is coming. But now our brains have the space for anxiety about the sedation, about the surgery, about his initial responses. The next week or so is gonna be hard. He had a good walk and enjoyed the morning sun with his bat-like ears up. Now he's flopped on his bed in my work from home office. Enjoying all this supervised time because it means he doesn't have to wear the doughnut (because of his biopsy stitches)Permalink On twitter.com

There's some kind of impulse like -- we should do something for Sterling, something before shit gets really really hard. But it's not like that. And shit is already really hard for him because he's limpy and has to take several pain meds not to be in more pain.Permalink On twitter.com

We do have some extra snacks although we're trying to make sure he eats a lot of regular kibble. In theory, this was gonna be anniversary vacation, so part of what I need to do is set up with a fun sewing project and he'll help in his favorite way -- by napping nearby.Permalink On twitter.com

Unfortunately I think his stitches are really starting to itch, so the donut had to go back on because he started fussing with them. We'd been able to supervise him and he wasn't bothering them at all so he got to spend a lot of time with it off.Permalink On twitter.com

FIRST THING THIS MORNING -- MADE HIM A SHIRT. I do need to shorten the length. The cuffs are meant to make it a littler harder for him to get at his biopsy (which is below the shoulder seam... though seams also on the outside for less irritation!)Permalink On twitter.com

let him out in the yard in his donut, trimmed an inch of the bottom for better dongle access and sloped it up to 1.5 off the back so it doesn't come ALL the way to the tail. I think we're set for now.Permalink On twitter.com

Vet called to confirm appointment. Honestly that was a relief — I was a tiny bit afraid something would come up to complicate it. We have reconciled ourselves to it as a thing that will help his painful limp/stumbles.Permalink On twitter.com

she says it's a fairly non-aggressive sarcoma, the kind of thing that has very good survival rates if removed like we're doing with this. 900 days average sounds ...short. But he's 14 so average 900 more days would be like his lifetime.Permalink On twitter.com

So we dropped him off at the animal hospital at 8 for surgery. He was a bit grumpy because he a) dislikes the donut, b) didn't get his morning carrot. But he was hydrated and exercised.Permalink On twitter.com

just got the call that he's going back for surgery now -- the vet is generally positive though he'll be getting painkillers to get through a few hard days up front. I made him a one-armed t-shirt that matches a jumpsuit I just made myself.Permalink On twitter.com
